While Shila knows this, and tries to bend to her Father's wishes, her heart has always belonged to her best friend, Charles Idenza of Jodan.
In addition to all of this, King Christopher of Fyde does not want the union of Ereidian and Loinnon to happen. If it did they would be the largest, strongest nations around. Therefore he embarks on a journey to try to win the Princess's heart himself, at all costs.
