Four months ago, twenty year old Joanna Ries' uncomplicated life as a Capetonian student was ruthlessly shattered by a horrific incident, of which she has told no one. When her older married friend, Kath Brower, dies of cancer, Joanna finds desperately needed distraction in helping Kath's overwhelmed widowed husband, Stephen, with his three children. After a few days of experiencing Joanna's tremendously helpful assistance, Stephen offers her a job as a live-in au pair, and she immediately accepts. As she moves into their home, and both tensions and tenderness quickly form between her and the individual family members, no one suspects for a moment that Joanna is trying frantically to outrun ineffable pain, grief, and regret that relentlessly threaten to swallow her up.
