Sixteen-year-old Sawyer Satoya-Sabinsky has it all. He's a genius in the wizarding chant language Silversong and the most popular boy in Willard Academy, a prestigious school for aristocratic wizards. He can afford to hex idiots out of his way and choose the prettiest girls.

When winds of change sweep over Willard and non-aristocratic students are admitted to study there, Sawyer refuses to accept it. He arranges a resistance movement, but his arrogance rapidly gains him enemies, none more dangerous than the Paraforce, a wizarding terrorist organization whose fighters use Shadowsong, a terrifying chant language that Silversong can't block, no matter how good you are at it. And the Paraforce might not even be Sawyer's greatest challenge - it might be Mia, an eccentric, crippled girl, who poses uncomfortable questions and kindles that aching secret Sawyer thought he had buried forever.

"What do you call a fish wearing a bowtie?" Instantly, Sawyer frowns, an unimpressed expression on his face. I continue to smile as I grab his shoulders and shake him, "C'mon, Sawyer, you gotta ask!! What do you call a fish wearing a bowtie??" He shakes his head, turning away from me as he presses his tongue to inside of his mouth. Flatly, he states, "We're not doing this shit, Mari." "Yes we are!!!" I giggle as he scowls at me. Booping his nose, I ask, "You ready?!!" "No." "I'm gonna say it." "No, you're not-" "SoFISHticated." "You're a fucking idiot." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *Slow Burn, Lengthy Chapters* Marianne Parker and Sawyer Cortez are complete opposites of each other. Destruction. In a family of healers who save, all I do is destroy. My enforced solitude is for my own safety as well as that of the world, or so my mother tells me. When the boy next door beckons, I can't help but sneak out to forge a friendship with him. Loneliness leads me to defy my family, but desperation prevails when I discover that the grounds of his private academy hold a secret that could help me learn why my ability is so disastrous . . . or push me to create a catastrophe that will bring only death and destruction. *** Merith Leigh has decided to give herself the best sixteenth birthday present ever: freedom. She's spent the last two years in silent communication with Taran, the boy next door, and his encouragement to meet him beyond their bedroom window views has tempted her to finally break free of her family's bonds. With a leap of faith, she trusts Taran with her future, and he takes her to meet his friends at his private academy, where a secret society that studies magic lurks with secrets of their own. Can Taran and his classmates help her discover why she carries the gift of destruction rather than her family's skill at healing, or will their association prove deadly?
