The last stars have burned out. Galaxies remain as little more than memory and dust. The oceans have all dried up, life is scarce, Earth is baron ball of rock floating through space. Humanity clings to the edge of extinction. Countless wars have reduced the most technologically advanced race in the universe, to little more than lawless animals, scrabbling in the dust for the smallest scrap of food. However, they are not alone. Just as they are adapting to their new Earth, something stirs in the darkness. For it is not what happens in the light you must be afraid of, it's what happens when the lights go out.
The story follows Kale Dratis, adopted son of the last Vault Lord, Master swordsman and champion of the hunt 3 times over. He, along with his childhood friend (and princess of the Denann province) Elaree Hetai, are thrown into an epic quest to find, and destroy the driving force of an infinite horde of ravenous creatures, before everything they hold dear is torn apart.
Will the last remnants of two dying races be saved, or is it time for humanity to face what they have done, and pay the ultimate price?

Before the fall of Earth humanity built a great colony ship, ten thousand of the colonist left Earth for a hundred year journey to Gillespie. They came from all over the Earth leaving a planet knowing they would never see another in their lifetime. The Ark is a rotating cylinder the size of a large island with its own train system. It's divided into three main sections, the city, the framlands, and the Lowers. The people are divided into three groups as well, Uppers, Middles and Lowers. Uppers are made of elite scientist, Astro-crops, bureaucrats they made up about 3% of the population. The Middles are are the farmers, the guard, teachers, doctors, the food processors, clothes makers and of course the mechanical maintenance workers. They make-up the 97% of the 10,000 counted citizens. The lowers are criminals and children born to un-paired parents. They live separated from the middles and Upper. In lowers you work in water reclamation or in one of the fish farms that supply protein to the ship. In the year 2149 Dylan De Rovia is trying to wrap her head around the idea that in two year's she'll be paired. That they call marriage on the Ark. Pairing is good most who are paired do end-up staying together because while genetics play good part in determining a match so does personality. Some people choose to use spend this time having a good time with as many partners as possible. Dylan however, vowed that she would never fall in love with anyone before pairing. The universe had other plans however, when Dylan learns that she'll pair with an Upper named Kyive Sinclar life gets more complicated than ever. Those in the first stages of illness became ideal candidates to receive the neuroinhibitor. Having their feelings restrained and their memory altered, those who come of age are designated a life partner through a Selection process, thus preserving the humankind. A few decades after the trial had started, scientists had a major breakthrough. The nanites, which are highly chemically reactive organisms, are changing their bio-engineered purpose when dopamine levels are high. With a new generation of nanoids, stronger and smarter to fight the battle, the virus doesn't have a chance. Many attempts were made to create a man-made version of synthetic dopamine and each time the outcome was a disaster. Their goal is to create new generations, immune to the virus. These are called Purebloods, the offsprings of those who find pure love, the only cure to save them from a violent death. Running out of time, the Experiment entered in its final stages.
