Day by day, I would look at the lonesome shack in the woods and wonder who lives inside. It all started on a normal day. I would help father by fetching wood and bring water to my mother for soup. When going into the forest to get wood and water from the pond, I would always see the shack from a distance. The lights were never on, and the windows were always broken. I was absolutely sure that nobody lived inside, until the tree near the shack was cut down with a sign on it, saying, “Whoever comes in, never comes back.”

I knew somewhere out there, my parents were worried sick. Somewhere out there, my friends wondered about me. I knew that a world like this wouldn't last forever, and I had to make it last. But I could always retell it.
