Hermione Granger made a life for herself after the war. Aside from the nightmares and images that invade every time she closes her eyes, everything is great. At least that's what Hermione tells herself in order to be able to sleep at night. But really, it's not that bad. Although being engaged to Ron has its cons, he loves her and provides her with hope for a decent future. At this point, that is all Hermione allows herself to expect from a man. But when a midnight encounter with a fox, a redhead, and a gravestone sheds light on a dark secret, Hermione's entire world collapses.
Loads of Fremione with other ships (including Hinny and Nuna) as undertones. Everything familiar belongs to JKR herself. It's a head canon and AU, but I'm trying to keep the story believable and in alignment with everything other than the last chapter of DH, in which the trio is married with children. Fred obviously isn't dead in this fic, but my explanation for this (!!!) does line up with Fred's SUPPOSED death scene and is integral to the story, so please suspend your disbelief!

Immediately after defeating Voldemort, Harry begins to have strange dreams, dreams that pull him once more into the realm of the newly dead. At first, the dreams are only a curious mystery, and Harry sets about putting his life back in order after the war. But when Harry dreams of Narcissa Malfoy, his life suddenly goes in a much different direction than the one he'd always imagined. This story ties up the loose ends about the Elder Wand and the Deathly Hallows. Choices of the Heart was written for the following prompt: "You are the true master of death, because the true master does not seek to run away from Death. He accepts that he must die, and understands that there are far, far worse things in the living world than dying." Note: The story contains conversations with dead people in dreams, most of these are older original characters, but there is one OC child. No actual deaths are portrayed and no canon characters die except for those who have already died in canon. I understand that death may not the easiest thing to read about for some, but I want to assure readers that I have tried to handle the concept of death in this story in the most uplifting way possible. This is not a story about loss and angst, but about finding hope and love, making choices, and trusting in the beauty and synchronicity of the universe, even if one crosses the boundaries between life and death. It was a couple years after the Battle of Hogwarts. A lot of people were finally getting over their shock of the war. Well, most. There were still plenty of people who were still grieving their friends or family's or people they just knew's death. George, for instance, hasn't told or did a prank in months after his twins death. They were practically two puzzle pieces, and if put together, the best prank combo ever. Also, Harry was devastated when Remus and Tonks died, he tried not to show it though. Now Hogwarts and many other institutes around the world are basically Hecate's pet world. Anyways, the one person who Hecate know that has gone through the most heartbreak, trauma, and betrayal and that is still sane is... Nico Di Angelo.
