WARNING- EXPLICIT CONTENT Kumiko is a girl who is severely abused. She is Japanese, adopted to a Chinese-american family, and is practically their illegal slave girl. Kumiko is very tired of the torturous things she has to do around the house. When she finally get's fed up with the constant beating and rape from her "father", Qiao, and her "mother", Lelia, She decides to burn down the house, and run escaping into a new life. She soon meets a group of runaway's who live in the ruins of a no longer populated town, surrounded by fenced off woods, who takes her in and treats her like family. With the help of a girl named Malaya, 19, and Ainsley, a 21 year old guy, she begins to realize what true family is and slowly learns to trust those around her. Takes place- 2045 Some facts about this time and place you need to know- In The United States, there are many abandoned cities and towns engulfed forest by due to fires, radiation, businesses closing, etc. Woods are often bordered off by electric fences so people may not escape into ruins of previous cities and end up uncharted. Yet many children, drug addicts, or people against the law, escape into these cities, and are written out to be dead, when police give up searching. This however, does not show up often in the book. Immigration is extremely limited, and when it does happen, it is usually only children.

The child population is at an all time low because of the increases of deadly diseases. Gangs start to rise up to use boys and girls for their own personal gain until Amber Stevenson, a 16 year-old girl from Georgia, witnesses her mother get sick and her father get shot in front of her as she is captured by one of the gangs. Along the way, they discover the truth of why they have the abilities they have, the reason behind The WildFires, and what the labs that put them through hell has actually done. As romances grow and situations start to evolve, the only question on her mind is can she save the only family she has left?
