Raith Slaughter is a dark boy. The darkness has always seemed to follow him whether asleep or awake. His temporary escape is his pen and paper. They shelter him from the town that shunned him and his family, unwanted memories of the brother who caused it all, and his own self-loathing mind. Hoping to find peace away at college, Raith falls in with a group of seeming misfits who offer him all that has been kept from him, including a chance at love. But even with his new found family, Raith still seems to be falling deeper into the purgatory of his imagination. He can't let anyone find out about his past, but the past just doesn't want to stay buried.

"Do you know what I think, Noah?" Kaden asked, his expression grim. "I think we're all really fucked up, and the world's better off with us gone." ***** Noah Bennett lives in the middle of the woods with his foster family, and things are far from normal. His older brother Kaden's favorite hobby seems to be tormenting him and his younger sister Mila can't ever seem to leave her brothers alone. But that's nothing compared to his foster father Daniel and Uncle Pat. The Bennett family might seem normal, if not a bit unorthodox, but what most people in Faircreek don't know is that every two weeks, someone in town is lured into their home and fed to a flesh-eating beast living in the woods. Noah desperately wants to stay far away from this violent life before he and Kaden are set to take over the "family business," but the only escape he has is being able to work at a bookstore in town with his only friend, a girl named Rowan. But, as far as Noah knows, there's no leaving the family. That is, until Kaden kills Uncle Pat, and all hell breaks loose.
