There was a time, once long ago, when the young Prince Erik was happy. He cared for his people, he found joy in his music, and he had fallen in love with a beautiful young woman. His future looked bright; he would one day become king of a prosperous and peaceful land, and he would be marrying the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. Everything was going better than the prince could ever have imagined.
But on the night of Prince Erik's twenty-fourth birthday, during the ball his parents had thrown for him, a fire began in the ballroom. In that one night, the prince gained a horrible scar on the right side of his face, he lost his parents, and the woman he who had stolen his heart was stolen from him. After her untimely death, the prince changed.
He became cruel and distant, wanting nothing other than to be left in his sorrows. But, one night, six years after the death of his love, Prince Erik discovered that he may not have lost her forever. When he discovers the young Christine Daae and her uncanny resemblance to his love, the prince became determined to not let her slip through his fingers. He would do anything to keep her at his side, even if it meant keeping her imprisoned in his palace.

It has been 10 years since Maya was adopted by De Chagny family after Erik's death. Despite all the good things that such a life has to offer, she still misses the Phantom. Suddenly an opportunity arises for a trip to America, where Christine is to sing. On their way there Maya discovers a secret, which might change their entire journey...
Better read "Phantom Child" before this one, it will help you understand the events better.
