Marr. One planet. Two different worlds. The humans and the mermaids have tolerated each other with seeming indifference for hundreds of years, but lately the resentment has reached a boiling point. War has been averted-for the moment. Under the water, Arika is content with her life. Suddenly her peaceful world gets turned upside down when the realization that the shell that contains the magic that allows the mermaids to breathe underwater has gone missing. The mermaids will slowly suffocate to death if the shell is not found quickly. With her friend Ring, Arika discovers that a human has it. And they aren’t planning on giving it back anytime soon. In order to save the mermaid land that they love they must do the impossible- become human. Once up above the water, Ring and Arika are swept into a drama with unplottable twists, pitfalls, prophecies, and great sacrifice. For nothing is ever certain. Not in this world.

Centuries ago, a group of humans made a choice to abandon their families for "freedom" in open waters. They didn't realize that family wouldn't be the only sacrifice. The ability (and desire) to love would be another. But the urge to love, the urge to be human, is slowly reappearing in the younger generations of mer-people. 18 year old Arilya is about to find out what the price of being like the humans is.
