The art of creating a Shield Contact, also known as an ancient form of black magic, is the written agreement between two people, where one pledges to become the protector of the other for life. The protectors, known as Shields, must attend to the every whim of their contracted master, known as a Wielder, and on rare occasions, even give their life to save that of their Wielder.
Shields are highly frowned upon by many, seen as a lower class of person, though only the rich are able to afford the price that comes with making a Contract. Bound by their Contracts and physically unable to harm their Wielders, Shields are forced to do as they’re told without so much as a complaint.
Lucas Evernight, Shield of the famous Lightenhart family’s daughter, doesn’t agree with the way his fellow Shields are treated and despises the fact that the Evernights have been Contracted as Shields for the Lightenhart family for generations.
Sent away to a military base for nine years to become as strong as he possibly can, Lucas begrudgingly returns to the Lightenhart household to take up his position as Alice Lightenhart’s Shield. Upon meeting the kind hearted Alice, Lucas’s view of Wielders begins to change, as Alice shows him that life as a Shield doesn’t need to be filled with misery. As Alice and Lucas grow up together, a beautiful friendship blossoming between them, tragedy suddenly strikes the Lightenhart family.
Blamed for the horrible tragedy, Lucas is banished from the Lightenhart’s home and sent away forever, much to Alice’s dismay. A few dismal years pass after Lucas’s banishment, when the city of Rukia is invaded, and Alice’s life is put in direct danger. Setting out to rescue her, Lucas jumps right into the fray, not realising that the danger threatening to take his Wielder’s life, is quickly escalating into a national crisis.
We all die someday right? That may be the truth unless you are granted with the gift of immortality. Now what do you to make your time on earth, worth living?
