Luz Diaz has finally learned to accept it. Her mother has cancer, there is no supernatural being that can save her mom from definite doom. While struggling with seeing her mom on her deathbed and allowing her father back into her life, what does Luz really feel?

I owed her a proper letter, I didn't write enough, but what could I say. It seemed like everyone else wrote so much more than me, but they probably had more people to write to than just their mom. Every time I tried to tell her what happened with Anne, what the trenches were like, how desperately I had to hold myself together, the agony I was always in, why should she know, what was the point. I never could figure out if it was kind or cruel that demons could never have demonic parents, my mom's humanity meaning she would never know how it was, and sometimes, like now, I wouldn't tell her if I could. I like being her invincible daughter, like no other succubus, how happy she was when I convinced her I would survive this, and I would, but she didn't need to know how, but I couldn't lie. My letter told her I was alive, not sick or injured, that I miss my home, I miss her, that I love her. It was what I could manage, so it had to be enough, she would understand. Love is strange. It exists in many forms and is one of the key components that makes humans happy, but there isn't a lot of understanding surrounding it. At least not the kind of understanding with which the average person identifies. Agnes is one of the few people that can accept all kinds of love. Despite her dated name, she is a woman in her late 20's dealing with the death of most of her family. She's now stuck in the middle of figuring out how to raise children that she never saw in her future and deciding what love means for her, when it has to exist within layer upon layer of complication. She let go of her boyfriend after almost a decade because their love wasn't meant to exist under the strain of children, only to find herself confronted with the overpowering connection of her old high school sweetheart. The same man she ran away from because their values hardly aligned when it came to how love should be expressed long term. Within the midst of learning how to raise children and balance her ever-building career, Agnes tries to recover from her mother's death, seek comfort without complicating her circumstance, and figure out why her mother would name her Agnes.
