Fortingale Manor is one of the most extravagant manor houses in England. Its ownership has been passed down through many generations. In 1887 it is inhabited by Lady Elizabeth Percival and her husband, Lord Charles Percival.
It is the eve of Elizabeth Percival's 22nd birthday. Her sister, along with three friends, have been invited to Fortingale to join Elizabeth and her husband in celebration. The next morning Elizabeth is missing. Charles Percival and his guests search for her, and she is discovered in a pool of blood in her bedroom, with a knife in her hand and a wound in her heart.
