Nobody really fears the unknown so much as they fear what might be there.  So then, what is it that might be in the dark that scares us?  What is it about the bump in the night that makes us jump?  What is it about the closet door being cracked open that makes us uneasy?  What do we think will get us?  Maybe not what, but who.  I've seen what's in the dark.
