I stand on the edge of the world. My world. I think. I'm the king. I slip off the building into the darkness that awaits me. My cover. *** There was a girl. She stood, swaying in the carriage. She stared through the stained glass. As always. Ordinary girl. Ordinary life. Auburn hair. Green eyes. Kind heart. But alone. *** There was a boy. He sat, unseen. He stared into thin air. As always. But no ordinary boy. No ordinary life. Black hair. Blue eyes. Cold heart. Alone. *** Now I crouch. What a mess I've made! Dread swells inside me. The light flickers; then it is gone. Sunlight spills over us, highlighting the scene before me. I stand, shaking, and lift the dead weight over my shoulder.

Every morning, he buys coffee from his favorite shop. He always chooses the window seat because from there, he can see her - the girl with soft eyes and tangled hair, always scribbling something in her journal at the bench just outside. She never looked up much. She was always writing. Always alone. But she had this quiet presence that made him feel... calm. Like the world paused a bit when she was there. He started going earlier just to see her. He timed his coffee runs to match when she'd be there.
