Thomas's escape plan didn't work, they are still very much so stuck inside the glade and it's been a year since they tried to escape. There used to be 45 of them, now there are only 24.
Thomas doesn't know what to do, he put all his effort into escaping and now that he couldn't even do that for himself and the gladers he feels disheartened.
Most of the gladers have distanced themselves from him, angry with him for the loss of their friends even though they know he wasn't the only one to go through with their failed plan to have some unknown freedom.
But hope arises as a girl comes up from the box who seems to have a connection with Thomas that only the gladers don't seem understand.
Can this strange girl help Thomas and the other gladers heal from their losses and maybe they could find freedom along the way.
