After picking off several of the minor ninja, they were able to kill Gaara's elder brother, Kankuro. After pursuing and locating the terrorists, Gaara was knocked out during the fight, proving that the people of the Village Hidden in the Shadows were a force to be reckoned with. The terrorists captured Gaara and took his memory, leaving him confused and only knowing his own name. The only thing remaining of his past life was the other name that still stuck in his mind.
