With almost the entire United States' military abroad, a severe outbreak of a volatile bacteria has left the United States nearly exterminated, and launched into anarchy with nobody to intervene. Raymond, or Ray, as his brothers and sisters call him, is an intelligent but overwhelmed man. Barely out of boyhood he is caught in the fight to create a future among a group of survivors in the Southern United States.
