He waits for her to come back.
He knows she will. Maybe not today... Nor tomorrow... And, maybe not even in a month.
But eventually, she will. He knows it in his heart.
People call him crazy for putting up with her antics for so long, but they only know half the truth. They hear the piercing screams in the middle of the night. They see her bloodshot eyes and the peeling skin around her knuckles that have tuned a bitter brown around the edges. They see her legs shake with every step; the meat on her bones falling off into small snowflakes.
But, what they didn't see was what they can't possibly see at all. She screams because she needs him. At three in the morning she wakes to cold sheets and scattered pajamas, and gets scared, so, so scared. Because when the nightmares come back stronger than ever, logic isn't there to save you.
Post-Mockingjay: It's been thirteen years since the war, and Katniss and Peeta are still trying to rebuild their lives.

"I remember everything about you," I reply, repeating his words to me. I expect to regret my honesty, feeling like I've shared too much. But I feel like I haven't shared enough. I want to tell him everything about himself, to prove just how much I remember. But I don't. When I was eleven. My whole world changed. Katniss' dad died in a mining accident. You think it wouldn't affect me but I loved him just as much as Katniss did. Maybe even more than I loved my own father. I felt bad, that my own dad couldn't compare to Katniss'. He loved me too though. Loved me like his own. The day he died was the first in a long line of times I have ever seen Katniss cry. She never cried before then but she cried a lot after. Katniss' mother was suppose to get a job after his passing, she didn't. They were starving, dying. I decided to help. After school I would drag Katniss into the woods by her feet. We'd never gone in there without her father. It seemed like a scarier place without him. After some time it wasn't so scary. I don't know what made me volunteer for Katniss. When I heard her name echo throughout the crowd my heart stopped. It wasn't my name, but it was my best friends. There was no way she could survive in there.
