The land of Aethuriad is split into six kingdoms, each protected by magic barriers to keep out sinister forces, built by the now-extinct Faeries.
Evangeline is the Crown Princess of Lymeris, but at age thirteen, she is sent to the kingdom of Raska to wed its next king, Ciaran.
When Evangeline's ailing father announces her uncle as regent, she is certain that he is responsible for her father's illness, and now conspires to take her crown.
Worse yet, her brother goes missing, and she finds that everyone at court has their own secret agenda, making trusting anyone impossible.
