I have always been defined in terms of my twin sister. For thirteen years, I was known as Allison’s lookalike. For the past three years, I have been the twin that survived. I am forever the twin that did not die. ---- When she was 13 years old, Cara Finch survived the car accident that claimed the life of her twin sister, Allison. In reaction to the guilt that quickly consumes her, Cara begins to pursue her sister’s dream of being a gymnast, throwing herself into the intense physical training instead of dealing with what has happened. Unable to deal with the pain, she cuts off contact with everyone, including her best friend James. Three years later, Cara's family stages an intervention and she is forced to begin focusing on her own life once again. But after so many years, can Cara find out who she really is, when her identity has been so entangled with her sister's for so long? Are her past friendships strong enough to overcome three years of radio silence? Is there hope for she and James?

No matter how absurd this story may seem, please remember that it is TRUE. It happened in real life. The fatal accident, not made up; the girl who had to ingratiate others to fit in, not made up; the rich, narcissistic girl who demanded compliment every day, not made up; the hostile girl who suffered through unimaginable pain, not made up. It looks fake, yes, but coincidence did bring these girls together, and Ella Cass, the author, is one of them. Which one of the girls? I'll leave you to guess. A note from Ella Cass: 'If I haven't had that instant where I narrowly avoided death, I would've got buried in the dark until everyone who has ever had any memory of me die off and it would be as if I've never existed. So, this accident, in some way, inspired me to write my experiences down, on the sole purpose of letting my memory live after my death that may occur tomorrow or decades down the road.'
