Some people become ghosts because they haven't told the person they love those three words, some people because their murderer hasn't paid, others because they haven't yet complete their lives work. Violet, however, is a ghost for a very different reason. They haven't got her story right, in fact people haven't got a lot of the stories right. That's why there's the DJS, death justice society. A society for ghost to uncover the truth about how they died. They don't remember how, or who, but they remember the one thing what the police said is wrong. 
Violet was always a little depressed. She was always a little bit sadder than others. But deep down, she knew she never would have killed herself. Violet was shot, a suicide note was planted, and her father's gun was placed in her hand.  The police may say she did it But she knows SHE WAS MURDERED. 
Violet searches the scene of the crime and discovers things she never really wanted to know. Because the difference between suicide and death is clear. 
One is isn't dirty and one is. One is respected one isn't. One gets pity and the other is made fun of. One isn't her fault and one is. One is the truth about her and one is a lie.

Ever since I was eight years old I have felt many different things for Emma O'Neal, and those feelings haven't disappeared with time. Problem is now that she's come home; I find myself fighting not only an unknown assailant out for blood, my partner's misguided beliefs but my own need for the enticing beauty I'm duty sworn to protect. Damn, I just hope I'm able to fight the feelings I have for this woman, and stay focused on the case. Otherwise, I might end up losing something far more precious to me than the honor I've worked so hard for: Emma's life.

In fact it's heart breaking when the people you used to love the most look straight through you. It's even worse when they blame you for their broken heart. Because they have no idea I'm dead.
