Phoenix  wanted to escape her life in Brooklyn. She was a fighter not in a metaphorical since either. Her code name was "Cut Throat " . Her father was a boxer and he taught her how to fight. Phoenix had got on a flight to Hawaii to escape when she met Mason on the plan. 

Mason was actually a fighter also but when he met Phoenix he kept that to himself because he thought she would see him as a monster or even a "Killer" as many called him in the boxing ring. His inspiration was actually Phoenix's father. He came to Hawaii for a boxing tournament and as fate would have it they meet again.
