The Shetland Noir book festival held in Lerwick in November 2015 included a short story writing competition. Shetland Noir Writing Competition, the prize being the Jimmy Perez Trophy (with kind sponsorship by Ann Cleeves).
The competition rules stated:
To enter submit one piece of crime fiction: 500-1000 words
Your piece must contain all of the following ingredients:
At least one corpse, or part thereof
One darkened room
At least one Nordic reference
Blood
The misuse of at least one kitchen utensil
A telephone that rings unanswered
THE BEACH HOUSE by Helen Grant, posted here, was the winning story. The 2nd prize was won by Matthew Wright with AND THE HILLS SANG WITH BLOOD and the 3rd prize by Marina Marinopoulos with JUST DESERTS.

***The Corner Booth Contest Runner-Up*** WARNING: contains one blue-eyed stranger, one fast-talking heroine, and a couple of scenes steamier than a mirage at noon. Throw in gigantic dust storms, lawmen out for blood, plus a wasteland to be traversed and you are in for an adventure sultrier than the desert sun! You would think May was living in paradise. After all, a gorgeous man just showed up on her porch willing to do anything she asks of him. But this is no paradise. May lives in a world settled by technology-rejecting idealists wishing to live in harmony with the land. That land, however, has not been very cooperative. The desert in the heart of the planet is spreading outward at an alarming pace, swallowing anything that gets in its way. And May? She's in its way, all right! Alone on her parents' dying farm, May has two goats, a shotgun, and a whole lot of dust. That's about all she has, until the day Ro shows up. Ro brings with him a secret most of their world isn't ready to face. The lawmen on his tail will do whatever it takes, including murder, to keep that secret buried in the desert sand. If they don't succeed in killing May and Ro, no matter: the desert might just do the job for them.Complete
SmackDown: Back to Our Roots
Our previous two SmackDowns were both massive successes, and it's high time for another. You might remember the last one was heavy on the "game" elements, maybe even too heavy. This time we're going back to the basics and keeping it simple. It's just a motherfuckin' sci-fi SmackDown: a heated writing contest where contestants are given text-, music- and visual-based prompts, and then they need to write a short story around that, following which they're judged for their efforts and either move on to the next round or they get eliminated from the competition. Before he could delve further into the idea however someone releases the 'monsters' and now he's in charge of getting it back together. It'd be a lot easier if citizens weren't getting attached. Now free for the first time in years Nightmare, Cross, Ink, Error, Killer, Dust and Horror are free from the bounds of whatever was going on. Facing the fact instead of abused skeletons they're asylum escapists. With only Blue, Dream and Lust not threatening them every second of every day they're forced to get to the border. However interaction for the first time in years is going to be awkward and might result in people realising they want t be more than friends...
