Alaska (10 year old daughter) and Claire (30 year old mother) moved to the town of maple wood to escape Claire's abusive ex boyfriend Roger.
When Alaska joins her new school she hates it and never wants to go. Claire debates home schooling but then a girl Allica moves to the town that she becomes best friends with.
But there new neighbourhood isn't the best and with Allica's sketchy parents getting involved with drugs and gangs, Allica is being hunted down by scary people and Allica isn't supposed to say anything but when she tells Alaska some bad things start to happen... and Claire has no idea.
