Annabeth Chase hates Christmas.
She never had a good experience with it as a kid, with her horrid stepmother and being on the run from monsters trying to kill her and all, not to mention the fact that the holiday itself was highly illogical. I mean come on, a fat guy sliding down billions of chimneys in one night? If he was fat how would he even fit in the first place?
To Annabeth it was a statement, a fact, she just didn't like Christmas.
To Percy it was a challenge.

Percy is the Chase's houseboy, a boy who serves the family with what they need. Annabeth is walking through town one day when she sees Percy steal some bread. She watches him get caught but Percy gets off with a warning. Annabeth walks by and when the merchant isn't looking she steals some bread and cheese. She goes after Percy to give him the food so he wouldn't go hungry. He takes the food and flees but becomes a wanted criminal since it is his second offence. Witnesses say they saw Percy take the food. Meanwhile, Annabeth is also stuck in an arranged marriage with the son of the other head of the Magistrates but is falling for the boy who stole the bread when she starts meeting up with him during the night. One day, Annabeth is sitting in on one of her father's court sessions and Percy is brought in, beaten bloody. Stuck in a maze full of flesh-eating robot spiders, it would be pretty good to actually know what the heck is going on. But he remembers only Annabeth -- her name and nothing more. Annabeth is lost. She can sense she doesn't fit in with the girls who find her in the Box. They took her in -- they're like family. But she knows one thing. She needs to get back to Percy, well, whoever he is.
