Anxious and excited for her true ink to get activated once she turns 16, Alexa awaits her upcoming birthday with mixed feelings. Once her true ink is activated the blood vessels on her hand will turn black and form a unique pattern, visible underneath her skin.
This exact pattern will show up on only one boy and one girl, soulmates, who will then spend their lives with each other.
But when Alexa's tattoo appears after she makes it through the Test that determines every 16 year-olds future life, it doesn't pair up with any boy.
Instead it shows up on another girl.

In this society, everyone has a soulmate. And the way to find yours is just look. Along with a soulmate, everyone has a small tattoo on their cheek with a symbol. Some could be a star, a flower, a yinyang, a fish, or even waves. There are so many people that the symbols are almost limitless. The tattoos don't care about gender or number. There could be gay matches, and there could even be polyamorous matches. The tattoos will tingle when you are near to your sm. And they will glow if you have found only one of your sm's if your match was poly. The trick is, you don't get the tattoo until you are 16. And even if you are near your match, as long as one of you are not of age, your tattoo will not tingle. Also, they are normal tattoos (except you don't get it or choose it, it just appears) so you can get rid of it. But if you do, your sm won't die but they will get very sick. The main characters of this story, Violet West (18) and Harper Black (20), both have a flame tattoo on their cheek. They live in the same state but for 4 years Harper paniced because she couldn't find her match. She wasn't sure if it was because her sm wasn't of age yet or if her sm lived far away.
