Between living with his abusive father and his isolated life, Charlie Clark dreams of the day when he can finally save enough money to leave and live on his own. During a visit to the grocery store, he is reunited with his cheerful childhood friend Beth, and both can't deny the spark they instantly feel for each other. As Charlie drives Beth home from a storm, they barely miss running over a girl who stands impassively in the middle of the road. When they crash, they are lost, scared, and injured. The girl who was the cause of their accident is gone, but there's a house where there used to be none, right across the road.
