Before The Wild Things

❝ Someone told us, ❞ Judith began, her eyes twinkling, ❝ That you, Max, aren't a king. ❞

❝ You're right, ❞ Max answered, emotionless, his eyes trained on Carol for sudden movements. ❝ I was never a king. ❞

With those last words, all the wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws and Max stood stoic, gripping his staff in his hand like a weapon. He pointed it towards Carol first, and clenched his jaw stiffly.

This is it, he thought, this is it.
And they charged.
