John is bullied constantly, even outside of school, and he can't take it anymore. He attempted suicide by slitting his neck, however is saved in time by his Dad, but not without consequences. John damaged his vocal cords, which could've been fixed, but John didn't want to be more of a bother than he thought he was. It's not like he talks much anyway.
