Rocco is the only villager with wings. His wings are blue and at night, also bioluminescent. Rocco is captured by the beautiful but cruel urvogels (winged human-like creatures) living on the cliffs of Upper Terrakesh. He witnesses the terrible punishment of urvogels having their wings cut off. Queen Harpia has decreed that private reading and music making are crimes - contrary to flock or colony principles. Rocco's new friends, Basalt, Vesta, Magma and Iggy are facing trial. If convicted they may lose their wings. Rocco must decide to risk everything in helping them, or escape on his own.

Liam's voice is frantic as he crawls toward me. He cups my face in his hands and checks my body for injuries. This time I know I am not imagining things. There are dark wings coming out of his back. I sputter a few fragmented sentences before I can get the words out. "What are you?"
