Mica, after failing to find a husband, is drafted into the army. This sounds normal, and it would be, if not for one thing.
Mica Nova Johansen is nine years old and trapped in the army with only a dog named Mae and a bunch of rough housing boys for company. As they travel through the desert, living from oasis to oasis, Mica Johansen finds herself and a couple other people who can help her fight the mysterious enemy when they arrive on the front ten years later.
