Suns in a Black Sea (ATEEZ Ot8 x Reader)

He looked at me as if I were the anomaly. A creature he couldn't fathom and didn't know why I didn't share the same hesitancy as my colleagues.
"We were not commanded." He finally answered.
He remained impassive, watching me as I resumed my exam. He didn't so much as flinch when I brushed the hair off his forehead, bringing the thermometer up to check his temperature.
"Where did you come from?"
I dropped my hands from his face as soon as I got my reading, those dark eyes following my every move as I wrote down his results.
"We come from nowhere."
"Is that the truth? Or is it more like you won't tell me?"
"We have no reason to lie doctor."
Meeting his gaze was like facing a predator. One I didn't know how to go up against, but looking away may have done me more harm than good.
"I'm not sure I believe that."
"You deem us untrustworthy?"
"Simply that you may have reason to not want to disclose more information to me than necessary."
"What about you? Do you trust them?"
I didn't need to ask who he meant. His eyes moved from mine to stare over my shoulder towards the one-way mirror on the far wall.
"Why wouldn't I?"
He leisurely shifted his eyes back to mine. They were heavy, suffocating.
"From the outside it seems as if you're bound by the same chains we are. Invisible they may be, but the less freedom they grant you."
"You're wrong." The words left me, but I didn't know whether I was trying to convince myself, or him.
His head tilted, but his gaze never wavered.
"Are we? At least with our shackles we know where we stand. Can you say the same?"
The straps over his body pulled taut with the way he flexed against them. He flipped his hand over, palm side up, as if it were an invitation for me to take.
"Would you let us set you free?"
