Kidnapped, molested, raped, and having been stripped of all that she thinks makes her human, Kale, a once cheerful and outgoing girl, has turned into a person even her one and only mother can't recognize. Now mute, terrified of human contact, and always jumping to conclusions about the smallest things, Kale believes she is better off dead than to have to live with her own insanity. So that's what she decides to do:
Kill herself, and this time, for the last time.
Luckily, Kale is brought back from the clutches of death by the hands of Jack Visconni, the most popular, obnoxious, sport crazed guy in school. Known for being a player, son of the school principal, and just oozing cash along with a gothic punk rebel vibe, he's the last person on earth anyone would expect to suddenly harbor a liking to the new transfer student.
But let's not forget about Derrick Hawkins his childhood friend. Big, intimidating, and black, he is one of the most misunderstood and prejudiced students in school, something he is determined to change. He lacks social skills and inherited his grandfather's hard looks making people think he is a gangster or a drug dealer, despite his obvious talent in academics, steadfast personality, and soft heart.
This is a story of how these two boys help pull a broken girl out from the depths of her own hell, while learning about themselves, the truth of the world, and what matters most in the end in the process.
