Scarlett Rhoades has never had it easy. Neglected as a child, she never learned to verbally communicate, and is violently bullied by her peers. When she enrolls at the Cressida School for The Mistreated, she honestly doesn't expect her horrid life to change.

Madison Avery has been deaf since birth. She is ostracized for her inability to speak her mind without the use of her hands. Desperate for a change, she convinces her parents to send her to Cressida, where the school gives her the only other roommate that cannot speak.

When the two girls, both from separate worlds and yet both lacking the ability to communicate, are assigned a single dorm in which to spend a year together, they learn that the words that people don't say are often the most important.
