"A Christmas Carol Reimagined" by Gratiana Lovelace, 2016
My fan fic "A Christmas Carol Reimagined" is the tale of a miserly middle aged man--a friend to no one--who is scared into realizing the folly of his ways when he is visited by three ghosts (past, present, and future). He then vows to be compassionate toward his fellow man and through his good deeds, he redeems himself--and he comes to know the meaning of love. My story here is my "mash up" of "A Christmas Carol" (original story by Charles Dickens) with Elizabeth Gaskell's "North & South", JRR Tolkien's (via Sir Peter Jackson's films of) "The Hobbit", and is set in the 1850's. This is legitimately the dumbest sugar-and-sleep-deprivation-fuelled plan I've ever come up with. Here's the synopsis: Santa is presumed dead. Mrs Claus is on a revenge quest. With the North Pole's magic unguarded, citizens of the world rush to storm the Toy Factory, but they underestimated the defenses. The elves are armed and mobilized. Toy designers weaponize the 'slay'. The Naughty List becomes a hit list. True terror is found to be the sight of eight charging combat reindeer. Armies will clash. Many will fall. Knitting needles will become outlawed in most countries. You ever thought you'd die if Christmas was cancelled? You got that pretty darn right.

Once upon a time, I was your typical good girl, doing my job like a total elf star, no complaints. Even with the little "gift" I was born with (aka my disability), I handled life pretty well. But let me tell you, luck's never been my plus-one. What am I talking about? Oh, just my lovely name-and the Christmas curse that comes with it! Every year, without fail, while my family's out decking the halls, I'm over here getting snowed under with the worst disasters. A Twisted Christmas
Every Christmas Eve, King Santa Claus soars through the skies to deliver presents in a sleigh pulled by eight flying reindeer. But until midnight, if you listen closely, you can hear his merciless whip snapping across their backs. Krampus, the goat demon and punisher of naughty children, was once the king's most trusted advisor, and even named heir to Santa's throne. However, when he began to question the North Polian monarchy, he was exiled to the outskirts of Antartica. Now, after spending a century in solitude, Krampus is finally summoned back to his home. Upon his return, he learns of how tyrannous the king has become in his absence. It isn't anywhere near the holidays, but it looks like Santa won't be the only one working overtime this year.
