Heaven has been destroyed, and the last surviving angels have created a new, imperfect heaven called 'The Painted World', where angels protect the souls of the dead in the fortress known as Sanctuary. But what could possibly reside in this new heaven outside Sanctuary; what could possibly warrant the need for such a fortress; what are the angels hiding from the inhabitants of Sanctuary?
