It came out of the trees like a ghost at midnight. It was so fast that it was invisible, making no sound. It ran through the fields effortlessly. It was a bullet. Its claws sinking into the ground as it approached the unsuspecting couple. Its howl ripping through the night, a murder of crows enters the sky in panic, like a cloud from hell they circle above the couple. I turn away, all I hear is the sound of ripping flesh. As I look back I see it dragging the motionless bodies through the field into the trees. Then the unnerving silence. Suddenly a scream breaks the silence. Another death, another blade of grass.

I locked eyes with it. Its amber gaze pierced through me, like it could smell my fear. There was something ancient in that gaze, something that stirred an unsettling feeling deep in my gut, a sensation I couldn't quite shake. Its claws scraped against the earth, long and curved, leaving deep marks in the fresh dirt as it moved closer. I could hear its paws thud against the ground, massive and deliberate, each step sending another shock of terror through me. The silence that followed was unnerving, heavy in the air, but then a loud crack shattered the stillness. It came from the forest-close, too close. The beast whipped its head back to the forest, quickly turning his whole body around so I was behind him. The shock from him turning so fast made me stumble a few feet backwards. The ground beneath us seemed to shift as it suddenly lunged forward, its muscles rippling with terrifying power. With one mighty leap, it vaulted over the rotting wooden fence, clearing the barrier effortlessly. The impact of its landing shook the earth beneath my feet. I staggered again, trying to keep my balance as I watched the creature, now free, pause on the other side of the fence. It cocked its head backwards meeting my gaze one final time. Then, without another notice, it darted into the forest, disappearing into the darkness like a shadow swallowed by night. I stood there, my body still trembling, staring at the empty space where the creature had been. The night had swallowed it whole. And though the sounds of the forest returned, soft and distant, the terror of that moment lingered. Was it still out there? Watching? Waiting? My eyes darted back and forth in the forest, trying to see it still hung around. I didn't know, but I couldn't shake the feeling that this encounter, this creature, was only the beginning. The Werewolf is a game with life and death. Under the sun or under the moon, every breath and every heartbeat has become a fight for survival. For the Werewolf has begun. Every truth is now lie. Every word is now false. Every gesture is now wile. The companions of yesterday are the enemies of today. The past protectors are the present murderers. The bonds of the heart and of the blood have been broken. For the Werewolf has begun. Forget the past. The smiles that have shone and the tears that have fallen hold no meaning anymore. Destroy all hopes and dreams for the future. The promises of tomorrow have become empty words. Fear the present. For the Werewolf has begun. ――― Emily Pierce didn't awake to the chirps of the birds that morning, neither did she to voices in the streets nor voices in the house. She awoke to silence that day and all of the days to follow. Every inhabitant of the Village had become soulless, they had gone mute, blind and deaf for the time of the game. Everyone but thirty of them, the thirty players. In a game where Werewolves killed Villagers and Villagers killed Werewolves, Emily had to find her allies from her enemies amongst the people she had always known. On that fateful morning, Emily started playing a game with herself and her first love, her best friend, her best friend's brother, with the child she'd babysat and the old man and woman she'd cared for her entire life. And she didn't know if she would survive, if they would survive, and above all, if they would deserve to.

The earth crunched beneath my feet, the harsh, cold wind biting my face as I ran through the dense forest. It was closing in on me. I could sense it. Its warm breath against the back of my neck, its footsteps thundering through the trees, its feral snarls and snapping jaws. But it was just a dream. A night terror that has haunted me for the past few months. Or was it... A mysterious howl echoes through the woods. A beast, calling her closer. Why her? Why would it want her?
