It had already come to this. My mother had driven me out of the house. She screamed things at me that I didn't want to hear, things no one wanted to hear; but I screamed equally horrible things right back. It wasn't an irregular occurrence, but for some reason, tonight I was feeling extra sensitive.
So there I was in the stable, soaking wet and saddling up my only friend in the world. I heard my mother screaming at me outside, drowning out even the pounding of the rain. Before she could reach me I had already burst out of the barn and was galloping in whatever direction I pleased.
Between the night and the storm clouds, it was pure black around me. I couldn't see two feet in front of me or my horse. A flash of lightning terrified him, and he reared up, dumping me in a puddle of mud. I hit my head and the world began to fuzz over.
A hand grabbed at the back of my shirt, pulling me up onto something high off the ground. The smell of a horse hit my nose.
"Who - who are you?" I mumbled, before slumping against his shoulder. I was passed out before I could hear his answer.
