He takes them without telling the others - it'd only raise suspicion. Plus, Newt can do whatever he buggin' wants, right?
He takes a pill every night. Each time, he reminds himself to breathe. An inhale, and an exhale.
The pills show Newt something that could change his life - they give him a chance to escape. With Thomas.
