To Caia Blackwell, life is cruel and unfair. She's never met her dad and her mom's in a mental institute, so she's stuck living with her brother in California until she turns 18. But when her brother gets married, it's obvious that living with a newlywed couple isn't an option. Convenient how the bride's family offers to take care of her for the time being. All the way in Alaska. Yippee. And of course, it doesn't take long for Caia to see that this family is...less than ordinary. There are about 12 cats that creep around the house and watch her while she sleeps, her new brother-in-law, Killian, is a soulless ginger who carries around a big honkin' sword, the grandpa raves about another dimension called "Thyren," and she's not allowed to go into the woods no matter what. So obviously she breaks the rule and finds a starlit lake in the woods. And of course, the sword-toting ginger is the one to find her, and Caia, being a clumsy buffoon, falls into the lake. Imagine her surprise when she's spat out into grandpa's not-so-made-up fantasy world, followed by Killian. And to make things worse, the gate crystal needed to cross portals was crushed in their landing. So now Caia has to stick with the pigheaded Killian through an unfamiliar world of fantasy and magic to recover another gate crystal to get herself back home.
