"Alright, just take it easy," he said, resting a hand on her thigh without a second thought, a reassuring touch meant to ground her. But for Vanity, the warmth of his hand on her leg was electric. Her eyes were drawn to it, her mind racing with thoughts she couldn't stop, thoughts she didn't dare say aloud. He must have noticed her staring, because he smirked, glancing at her. "What? My hand doesn't bite, I promise."
She jolted, quickly looking away, feeling her cheeks burn as she forced herself to sit up straighter. "I-I wasn't staring, I was just... regaining my balance." He chuckled softly, but didn't press further. "How long was I out?" she asked, eager to change the subject, to distract herself from the awkward flurry of emotions swirling within her.
"About ten minutes, maybe. Don't worry, no one thinks any less of you," he said with a playful smile.
"Still," she murmured, feeling her pride wounded. "It's embarrassing. I've never lost a duel before."
