It's 1907 in San Francisco, California. All Niklaus Sutro wanted to be was loved, but lost all hope when his father died when he was younger, leaving a mysterious girl around the same age as him. Now seventeen, Niklaus is the still intelligent but he uses it to stay an arms length from everyone. Filled with agony and despair, Klaus pretends to not be affected by his brother Charlie's sickness and that fact that the girl he loves is falling in love with a sadistic murderer who wants to kill her. Wonder why you ask? It's the fact that she's a mermaid.
