child begins to experience a sexual desire for the parent of opposite sex, this leads to aggressive envy towards the parent of same sex, child begins to identify with same sex parent in order to vicariously have opposite sex parent. desire for same sex resolves into general heterosexual desire.

consequence that can occur due to problems during this stage include: narcissism, promiscuity and - in some cases - homosexuality.
