Helena Raymond is a suburban housewife living in a nice, quiet neighborhood, where nothing unusual or strange bothers the residents. Until she notices little Nathan Anderson, a young boy who sits by himself in the middle of summer, avoiding contact with kids his age. And strangely, they avoid him, too.

Something is wrong with the Anderson family, Helena knows. Very wrong. Sarah, Nathan's mother, seems to burst into tears easily, an unexplained bruise appears under her chin one morning, and she seems very reluctant to talk to anyone about her family...

Is something going on here? Helena wonders. Do all stories have a happy ending, where the villain is unmasked and defeated soundly by the protagonist? Can Helena confirm her suspicions and stop the abuse before it's too late--or is anything happening at all? The truth is as muddled as fiction, sometimes, and Helena finds herself right in the thick of the mess.
