Being a psychic has never worked out in Jim Halliday's favor. His involuntary communications with the dead only complicate things when he's trying to keep a job, to deal with his rationalist father, to get a girlfriend, or to simply shop for groceries. He'll do it if he has to, but not if it involves murder victims. He tried it once, and it didn't work out.

Then one day Jim meets a girl who tells him she was killed by Zachariah Searcy, the culprit from the last murder case Jim tried to deal with. Thanks to Jim, Searcy has been in prison for years - at a grave price that haunts Jim to this day. Now Searcy's escape and subsequent quest for revenge finally force Jim to uncover the mysteries behind his ability, to confront the consequences of his past, and to get his life together, for crying out loud.

As the elevator opens, the stranger loosens his grip and the victim falls on the floor. Covering his bleeding eyes, Artemis winces from severe pain. The man whistles away as he walks past the dead body of the security guard in the lobby to the snowy road outside the building. His victim crawls out of the closing elevator. The curse is true.
