Shortlisted for the Open Novella Contest 2019 • Being a Supervillain is tough. Between managing a secret lair and making sure your mom doesn't stop loving you because you keep telling everyone she's dead, it's a really hard business to be good at? Add to that, the fact that somehow you got arrested because your cat sitter didn't take the day off and then you go around expressing your unconditional love for pancakes in a Super holding cell because technically they can't put you in a proper prison and you don't really have a choice because lawyers are expensive? And then, you realise your best friend is plotting go take over your spot as the greatest villain there ever was? Okay, maybe not the greatest, but you do come pretty close to it! To top it off, there's that one Superhero who's just so completely gorgeous, you couldn't imagine any harm coming to them? Because they're just that precious? I guess that makes me a Supervillain with minor time travel superpowers and a huge crush on a not so powerful Superhero? And all you have to do is protect yourself and everyone you love from your ex best friend/sidekick --because let's face it that's the highest level of praise for a wretched traitor here--and you also have to get out of Super Holding somehow? What could go wrong? Right?

It all started with a superhero, one who vowed to help save the world and use her powers for good....But how can one keep a promise if they don't remember making it? What happens when the lines to right and wrong blur? When promises have to be broken? When the one thing you thought you could never lose, your morality, comes into question. What happens when the only person in the world that understands you is the person you believed was evil. But a reputation can be fabricated, evidence can be tampered and memories can be manipulated. How does one decide who's good and who's bad? Who's the hero and who's a villain? Maybe the only real difference between the two is a change in perspective or perhaps keeping an open mind. Sometimes even a "Villain" has a good side and even a "Hero" has a bad one...so what would happen if they were to see eye to eye?....Who would be there to pull them from the deep end?...or maybe the high tide is exactly where they want to be.

"I've been looking for you." There was an unexpected rasp to his voice, a hint of desperation. He stretched out one hand, as if to brush it across my cheek, or perhaps wrap it around my throat. Oddly enough, I didn't know which option frightened me more. *+*+*+* Lily Burdett has an unfortunate gift for getting herself into tricky situations, but her luck is especially bleak the day she finds herself in the destructive path of the city's premier supervillain. When he grabs ahold of her, she reacts without thinking and stabs him twice in the shoulder, only surviving the encounter thanks to a nearby hero who intervenes on her behalf. Long ago a group of superheroes and villains worked together to prevent an invasion. But they managed to kill more people than they saved. Their destruction caused the perception of those with powers to dramatically shift; to the point of outcast. 50 years later crime as only increased to the point where not even the police respond to calls. Few heroes went into hiding to 'play normal'; like my family and I. I live in New Haven City. I've been lucky enough that I don't have powers that attract too much attention --- Everything was going great. Everything was normal. Until Jamie was forced to confront the reality of her situation. The mayor who has been running the NSA was beginning to take drastic measures. Sending many supers off to another island. Stealing their powers. Forcing others to betray their own kind. The victims of these horrific acts are not taking that lightly. Why not make a team of heroes? A team that doesnt give a shit what the NSA or the Mayor has to say. A team of young teens who probably don't even listen to each other. That will save the world...

In 2027, the world is in decline, with rampant terrorism and criminals emboldened to steal and murder in public. Countries all across the globe setup spy networks and heavily militarize their police forces, with governments more willing than ever to cast aside human rights to assure a safer world. Among the normal population are a group that wildly differs in one way...they are arken, seemingly ordinary human beings that possess superhuman abilities. These people must try to live their lives while dealing with the dangerous groups that want to see them wiped out.

Once upon a time, five people agreed to be part of a secret experiment. The experiment was meant to give them superpowers. They were promised that their loved ones would not be affected by the experiment, no matter what the outcome was. This was good, as the experiment failed--or so they thought. For one, it was her first child. For another, his second-born. For a third, her third. For the fourth, her fourth, and for the fifth, his first. They were all born with strange powers--powers that nobody could explain, and that put everybody around them in danger. Taken from their parents, the children were raised apart from society. They served a particular purpose. Nothing would go wrong. Until something does... or a lot of somethings.

Flawed logic, sure, but Masquerade would do anything to escape the person he's become. But when this organization takes their agenda a step too far, resulting in a tragedy far too close, Masquerade has got to choose: to be the person he's learned to be, or to fight back. *** COMPLETE

Throughout all of history there have been stories of people with powers and abilities. Stories of gods, heroes, monsters, demons and angels. What would you do if one day you woke up to find everyone had gained their own unique powerset? The only caveat... For whatever reason you never received any powers... Like, at all. Well, that is exactly what happened to me. At least it is what I thought happened to me. This is the story of all the things that I have done to receive my powers.
