u·to·pi·a

yo͞oˈtōpēə/

noun

an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. The word was first used in the book Utopia (1516) by Sir Thomas More.

dys·to·pi·a

disˈtōpēə/

noun

noun: dystopia; plural noun: dystopias

an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one.

Perfection is unachievable. We should know that, but of course nobody taught us. If they did then it's doubtful their message would have gotten through. Humans are a thick, stubborn race. Granted we learn from our mistakes--I'll give us that much--but not before we make them.

The dictionary says that utopia is an 'imagined place or state of being'. That means it can't be obtained, which only makes humanity strive for it even more.

The dictionary also says that dystopia is imaginary, but it is my belief that this is easier to gain than utopia. Repugnance is almost always more common than beauty.

I cannot begin to express my disgust for mankind's attraction to outward beauty. The world itself is an epitome of the ideology doctrine; it appears alluring on the surface, but if you dig a little deeper you can see the angry, writhing mass of tar boiling just under a cheap facade.

The world is as ugly as it is pretty, but people were made to look for only the appealing side of nature. Humans themselves are made up of that hazy gray area between light and dark. We are not pure, but we are not tainted.

We are a dirty slate messily wiped clean by the shaking hands of God.

Seventy-four years has been long enough. The way of the infamous Hunger Games has been altered. No longer is every Gamemaker out to devise the worst means of torture and death for every tribute. No longer are the people of Panem outwardly tolerant of President Snow's murderous actions. Under the facade of a normal group of Gamemakers, several rebellious citizens have begun an experiment which, if it succeeds, will make use of technology both to rescue the tributes before they are dead and then deposit the brainwashed children back in time. They have to try it. No one knows what horrors future Hunger Games may bring, and the desperate rebels are willing to try anything. Meanwhile, in the mountainous regions of District 2, Cato Hadley and Clove Kentwell have trained their whole lives for the Games. Nevertheless, their ambitions change when they, without meaning to, find themselves in the Games together. They are both determined to win. But if they don't, what will happen to them? The brainwashed tributes who land in New York City know nothing of who they are or where they are from. They do not remember Panem, or the Games, or even their own names. This is a science fiction story based off the Hunger Games and its characters. Disclaimer: I do not own any of the Hunger Games! This story is based around a plot twist I created, but all rights go to Suzanne Collins, the author of the original series. Disclaimer no. 2: this was a first draft written by a very awkward fifteen-year-old me; please treat it as such. Thank you, readers! PG-15: [Yes, you read that right. I would recommend teens not read it until they are 16!] Profanity, violence and sexual situations. Warning: There is talk of cutting and suicide. If any of these are triggers for you, please consider that when reading. Take care. Rob What if death forgot you? In a future that could be ours, Lizzie, a suicidal teen-age girl, barely navigates her own life. Then everything falls apart. In an apocalyptic land nearly deserted by disease, she lacks reasons to live until a shocking turn of events reveals a phone number. Her call pulls her dangerously cross-country to meet a stranger she thought was dead. In a world where there is plenty of food, plenty of gas, plenty of space... fear, anger and a lust for power still control the patterns of human life. This coming of age, edgy young adult novel is the debut of a former alternative high school teacher. If you like this, try Toils and Snares, a Deserted Lands novella, sampled on Wattpad.
