When tragedy hits, sometimes we humans find the worst way possible to deal with it.
So when Celeste Everett (a black girl from Florida) loses both of her parents in a lethal car accident, she grieves in the worst way possible. Partying into the wee hours of the night and the occasional hookups.
Her grandma having not enough to feed herself and a growing girl, sends her to live with her moms former best friend. Which is halfway across America.
Not expecting what to come, Celeste steals herself, vowing not to let anyone get to close, because in the end they will end up leaving like her parents did.
