Emily had just moved to a new town, a new state, with her mother and her two little brothers. So far, she had a pretty normal life, despite her childhood. She grew up a hunter, stalking the woods with as much silence and grace as a puma. She had amazing hearing, better than the average person. Her mom liked to say she could hear a cricket fart 50 feet away. Her sense of smell was above average; she could smell and track a deer by their musky smell. Even smell the difference between a male and a female.

Yet, despite all that, she was fully human. Growing up the way she did, just shaped her. And the eyes in the rickety house could see it better than most.
